Background

Transferrin is a serum glycoprotein that plays a central role in iron metabolism, being responsible for the transport of ferric ions in the body. It is produced mainly in the liver and is capable of binding two atoms of ferric iron (Fe³⁺) with high affinity, which is essential for maintaining iron in a soluble form and preventing toxicity from unbound iron.
