Background
Hepatitis A is an acute infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), which belongs to the Hepatovirus genus within the Picornaviridae family. Clinically, Hepatitis A is often asymptomatic or mild, especially in children under five years old. In adults, it presents with abrupt onset of fever, malaise, and abdominal discomfort, with jaundice as the predominant symptom. Hepatitis A is highly contagious and is transmitted through contaminated water, food, and the fecal-oral route, with an average incubation period of 28 to 30 days. There is no chronic form of Hepatitis A, and recovery confers lifelong immunity.
