B. abortus is known for its ability to cross the species barrier and has been isolated from a variety of animals, including cattle, which are the primary reservoir for the disease. The bacterium is transmitted to cattle through direct contact with infected animals, consumption of contaminated feed or water, or through the inhalation of aerosols. In humans, the disease is often contracted through contact with infected animal tissues, consumption of unpasteurized dairy products, or inhalation of contaminated aerosols.
